Newquay is probably best known for its surfing events and the now legendary ‘Run to the Sun’ in May. It’s one of the biggest events in Newquay, where thousands of VW enthusiasts gather in the town for a weekend of music, comedy and fun as well as taking the opportunity to show off their prize campers and ‘bugs’. Although the Run to the Sun really kicks off the main season of events in Newquay, the town has a thriving events calendar throughout the year. Music, rugby, polo on the beach, surfing, windsurfing, food festivals, Christmas fayres and theatre - there's something going on to suit all ages and tastes, all year round, so whatever time of year you take a holiday in Newquay, there’s something fun to visit.
June sees the start of the surfing events in Newquay, with the Zapcat King of the Surf Grand Prix and the BLU Midsummer Classic longboard competitions drawing in some of the world’s finest surfers to the beaches of Newquay. The King of the Surf Grand Prix is the only leg of the Zapcat circuit that takes place on a surfing beach in Newquay and gives spectators a chance to watch these super-powered, twin-hulled catamarans leap and twist out of the water.
The BLU Midsummer Classic sets the scene for the summer months, when the Boardmasters 2009 comes to town in August. Boardmasters is the highlight of the UK surfing calendar and is Europe's biggest surf, skate and music festival. This event in Newquay brings world-class surfing to the town, along with seven nights of music and skateboarding on Fistral Beach. The 5 Star world qualifying event is the pick of the week with some of the world’s best surfers competing for major cash prizes.
For those who want to enjoy Newquay’s beaches but may not be into surfing, the town’s celebration of Midsummer Day on the 21st of June is highlighted by the Sandcastle Competition on Lusty Glaze beach. This charity event is open to everyone and the competition starts at 1pm with live music and a barbecue from 3pm. There are prizes for corporate teams, families and juniors, with all proceeds going to Penhaligon's Friends; a Cornish based charity for bereaved children.
Throughout the year, Newquay plays host to a wealth of musical talent, comedy festivals, fun runs and special events, culminating in the Christmas festival events in Newquay from the 18th December. The Christmas festival is a 3 day celebration of the arts, music, food and theatre, rounding off the year in style and marking Newquay as one of the most sociable and entertaining towns in the South West.
